Prof Dr Jan Bouzek, born 17 February 1935 in Prague, studied prehistoric and classical archaeology at the FF UK in Prague between 1953 and 1958. From 1958 he had an Assistent position, achieved full CSc status in 1966, was a Humboldt scholar at the University of Tübingen in 1967-68, and at the turn of 1968-1969 produced his first habilitation, published in 1969 as Homerisches Griechenland. His habilitation was, however, cancelled. In 1980 he produced his second habilitation on Macedonian bronzes and in 1983 became Docent, in 1991 Professor and in 1992 gained the title of DrSc. Between 1969 and 1991 he also led the sub-department for classical archaeology in the National Museum in Prague and conducted also further museum work: from 1969 the Gallery of Classical art at Hostinné and from April 1994 till 2010 the Museum of classical sculpture and architecture at Litomyšl. In both of these, as well as at the National Museum, he organised a series of exhibitions, notably the comprehensive exhibition of classical art at the National Gallery and the much travelled World of the Etruscans in 1988-89.
He has led a series of excavations in Bohemia, and in the sixties took part in several excavations in Greece. He published the results of the old excavations of Professor Salač at Kyme in Asia Minor and on Samothrace; from 1980 to 1983 he led the excavations at Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka on behalf of UNESCO (publication of which was honoured by a rector’s prize for the best scientific work of the year), and from 1990 for several years the training excavation at Mušov in southern Moravia. From 1993 to the present day he has directed the excavation of the Greek settlement of Pistiros in Bulgaria and in 1996 he led the Czech UNESCO excavation in Beirut.
His chief specialisations are early Greek, Etruscan and Thracian archaeology, but he has also devoted many studies to prehistoric central European and provincial Roman archaeology, and to the reception of classical and Czech art. He also works in the field of relations between the civilisations of central Europe and the Mediterranean. His main foreign language books are Homerisches Griechenland (1969), Graeco-Macedonian Bronzes (1974), The Aegean, Anatolia and Europe: cultural interrelations in the 2nd millennium B.C. (1985), Studies of Greek Pottery in the Black Sea Region (1990) and Greece, Anatolia and Europe in the Early Iron Age (1997). He was the editor and main author of the volumes Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Tchécoslovaquie 1-2 (the third as République Tchéque, 1998), and the Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum, Hongrie et Tchécoslovaquie, together with J.-Gy. Szilágy, appeared in 1992 in Rome. Five volumes on the excavations in Bulgaria (Pistiros. Excavations and Studies I-V) appeared between 1997 and 2013. From 1995 he has been editor in chief of the peer-reviewed journal Studia Hercynia.
