Ümit Güder, PhD, completed his undergraduate degree in Material Science and Engineering at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and later earned his PhD at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University’s Institute of Social Sciences in Art History, Turkey, focusing on iron metallurgy in Medieval Anatolia.

Dr. Güder’s expertise lies in archaeometallurgy, with a particular focus on ancient iron and copper-based alloy technologies of Anatolia. His research spans a broad geographical and chronological range, from Iron Age metallurgy in Cilicia and Ionia to early brass production in Urartu. He has contributed to archaeological projects at sites such as Kinet Höyük, Çavuştepe, Kubad Abad, Sirkeli Höyük, Tel Akko, and Miletos, where he focuses on ancient metalworking practices and materials.

He has held several research positions, including as a Heinrich Winkelmann Postdoctoral Fellow at the Deutsches Bergbau Museum in Bochum, Germany, where he conducted research on early iron metallurgy in Cilicia, and as an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institut für Eisenforschung in Düsseldorf, leading a project on crucible steel technology in medieval Anatolia. Since 2023, Dr. Güder has been a researcher in the PRIMUS program at Charles University’s Institute of Classical Archaeology in Prague and a guest researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials. His work includes collaborations on various research and training projects focused on the metallurgical history of Anatolia.
