The official languages of the Congress are English, French and German. Its specific subject is the Black Sea area and its relationship with ancient Central and Eastern Europe (1st millennium B. - 5th century AD).

Planned sessions of the Congress

Opening session and Opening Lecture

Sessions:

  • Cimmerians and Scythians in Ancient Central and Eastern Europe
  • Hallstatt and Balkan Antiquities of the Early Iron Age (Thracians, Illyrians and their neighbours, including Greek colonies).
  • Celtic (La Tene) antiquities in Central and Eastern Europe and their relationship to their eastern neighbours, including the Aegean and Anatolia.
  • Romans and Barbarians in the Danube Basin.
  • The Black Sea and ancient Central and Eastern Europe during the Migration Period.
  • The First Slavs in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • New excavations and projects

Closing Session and Closing Lecture

Since there will not parallel sessions, the number of oral presentations is limited (each lasting 15 minutes). This means that not all submissions can be accepted for oral presentation; to allow for maximum participation, large poster sessions will run parallel to the oral proceedings - a numer of offered papers are included as posters The results of recent or current projects, innovation in methods, and the exploration of little known areas have been given priority.

A limited number of participants can be lodged in the University hotel at Jinonice, and in two pensions in the vicinity; more rooms will be available at a hotel near to the airport. For those wishing more comfortable hotels special arrangement will be available, but hotels can also be booked through the tourist agency or travel agents.

In these hotels, single rooms are available now for ca. 30 Euros, double rooms for ca. 50 Euros per night.

Double and single rooms in student dormitories are available for ca. 10 - 15 Euros per person. Following the policy of the previous two congresses, Eastern European participants presenting papers and/or posters will be accommodated free of charge (in the student hostels) in double rooms. For single rooms a supplement will be charged.

Sunday, September 18th

Departure of of the remaining participants, with the exception of those who have booked for the five-day post-Congress excursion.

Five-day, post-Congress excursion, to visit Roman and other antiquities in the Czech Republic.

6th day: Departure of those who participated in the post-Congress excursion.

Excursions

  • Excursion during the congress: City of Prague, free
  • One-day (Saturday, September 17th). Celtic oppida: Zavist and Stradonice.25 Euros including lunch. Free overnight stay (September 17th/18th) in student hostel for participants from Eastern Europe [he has former Communist countries!!!]
  • Six-day OR Six days but NOT Six-days (Sunday, September 18th-Friday, September 23rd). Other main archaeological sites in the Czech Republic. Price approx. 250 Euros, depending upon number of participants.
